The kitchen with walnut-toned cabinetry and a deep, veined waterfall island

Cristina Caumel

Cool Homes Studio

A house that feels calm the moment you walk in — warm white walls, luminous floors, and the richness saved for the places you actually touch.

Cristina Caumel works out of Coral Gables, a few streets from this house, and led its interior from first concept through to the final fitting.

That is a wider brief than decoration. It covered the kitchen, its hidden pantry and its surfaces, the millwork in every room, the four bathrooms, the floors, the closets, the lighting scheme, and the way the palette moves from one space to the next without ever announcing itself.

The result is deliberately restrained. A warm white shell. Luminous floors underfoot. Walnut tones and deep veining held back for the kitchen and the vanities, where your hands go. Glass given the whole length of the living spaces, so the oaks and the water do most of the decorating and the room does not have to compete with them.

The details that cost the most are the ones you are least likely to notice. The ceilings carry linear recessed diffusers rather than standard grilles, so nothing interrupts the plane. The cove lighting in the primary suite is built into the structure rather than applied to it. Every closet is a made piece rather than a fitted kit. None of it shouts; all of it is finished to the last inch.

Her practice covers interior and exterior design, material and finish selection, site planning and project management, working across Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Miami, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Kendall.

Selected decisions

  • The kitchen

Walnut tones to the ceiling, a deep espresso waterfall island, and an appliance wall that disappears behind full-height doors, and a pantry hidden behind it.

  • The primary suite

Cove lighting set into the structure, glass to a private garden, and a dual-vanity bath in soft, warm neutrals.

  • The palette

Warm white walls and one luminous ivory floor that carries you from the front door straight out to the pool.

  • The ceilings

Linear recessed diffusers throughout in place of standard grilles, so the vaulted planes stay unbroken.
